Abstract

The adsorption of mutans streptococci to the tooth surface is the first step in
development of dental caries. In order to prevent such dental caries, materials inhibiting
adsorption of bacteria to acquired pillicle are required. The present study was designed
to investigate the effects of berberine on the adsorption and desorption to the
saliva-coated hydroxyapatitie beads(S-HA) of S. mutans(serotype c) KCTC 3065,
S.sorbrinus SL-1 KCTC 3308,, S.sobrinus OMZ65 KCTC 3307, S.rattus KCTC 3294, and
S.cricetus KCTC 3292 in vitro.
Berberine, a extracts from Coptis chinensis, inhibited the adsorption of mutans
streptococci to S-HA. In S. sobrinus SL-1 KCTC 3308, berberine had a strong
adsorption inhibiting activity to S-HA. But in S.mutans KCTC 3065, S.sobrinus OMZ65
KCTC 3307 and S.rattus KCTC 3294, the inhibiting of adsorption to S-HA was not
detectable by 100§¶/ml berberine.
However, berberine had no desorption activity against mutans streptococci preadsorbed
to S-HA.
